Zone 2

In plain English

Steady, comfortable aerobic training at an effort you could hold for a long time while still talking. Its exact boundaries depend on which zone system you use.

Also called: Easy aerobic training

What it is

“Zone 2” usually means easy, steady aerobic work: comfortable enough to hold a conversation and sustain for a long time. In a five-zone system it’s the second band. Physiologically it sits around or below the first lactate threshold, where blood lactate first starts to rise above resting levels.

Why it matters for training decisions

Descriptive studies of competitive endurance athletes find that most of their sessions are done at low intensity, with a smaller share of hard interval work. Plenty of easy volume builds aerobic fitness while leaving enough freshness for the sessions that need to be hard. A common mistake is letting easy days drift into a moderate “grey zone” that’s tiring but not hard enough to count as quality.

How wearables measure it, and the limits

There’s no single definition. A Zone 2 set from 60–70% of max heart rate, one set from heart rate reserve and one set from a threshold test can sit in noticeably different places. The same watch can also call one run Zone 2 in cool weather and Zone 3 in heat, because heart rate drifts upwards over long or hot sessions.

A simple check helps: if you can’t speak in full sentences, you’re probably above it, whatever the watch says.

How P247 uses it

Your Zone 2 in P247 comes from the heart rate zones you set up once you turn zones on, whether from your max, reserve or threshold heart rate, your own limits, or zones you copy in by hand from Strava.
